The Shelby County 4-H Food Project kids have been quite busy over the past several months.  In February , the Food Project  began with educational workshops on Kitchen Safety, Food Safety, Nutrition Basics and Public Speaking. During these workshops held, participants practiced this knowledge gained while perfecting their food prep and cooking skills.  
The 4-H County Food Show was held on Jan. 14, 2012 at the Shelby Courthouse. The following youth received first place awards: Tyler Morris - Blueberry Yogurt Parfaits - Intermediate Division; Taylor Morris - Healthy Pumpkin Oat Bread - Intermediate Division; Sara Gillis - Cheddar Ranch Dip - Intermediate Division; Holly Hughes - Mexican Chicken Stew - Intermediate Division; Jaxon Brittian - Peanut Butter Bees - Junior Division; and Mallory Fausett - Low Fat Strawberry Bread - Junior Division.
These 4-H’ers then advanced on to District which was held Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches. Those placing at the district show were as follows: Poster Contest – Mallory Fausett, 2nd Place, Junior Category; Sara Gillis won 2nd place, Intermediate Category; and Taylor Morris 5th Place, Intermediate.
At the Food Show:  Mallory Fausett, 5th Place in Junior Breads; Jaxon Brittain, 3rd place in Healthy Snacks; Taylor Morris, 3rd place in Breads and Cereals; and Tyler Morris, 2nd place in Fruits and Vegetables.
In the Food Challenge:  The intermediate team consisting of Sara Gillis, Justin O’Rear, Tyler and Taylor Morris, and Holly Hughes and took 3rd place in the District Show.
The Junior Team consisting of Kelsey Adair, Jaxon Brittain, Mallory Fausett, and Brylee Scarborough also competed and took 5th place in the District Show.
In Display, Sara Gillis took 3rd place in the District.
Project Leaders, Bridgette Hughes and Stacey Vandrovec, have really worked hard to provide leadership and relevant educational workshops for our 4-H Foods Project. Thanks to our project leaders for going above and beyond to make this experience for the kids fun and enjoyable. Also for taking their time to make our community a better place for our youth.  Special thanks to the following parents for volunteering their time during workshops and serving as District Food Show Judges: Bridgette Hughes, Jennifer Fausett, Shana Brittain, Angie Gillis, Stacey O’Rear, Stacey Scarborough, Tracey Adair and Karen Morris.
