A new grocery store has arrived in Timpson to provide for a variety of the community’s needs. Miller’s Country Market is located on U.S. Highway 59 North in Timpson
“We’ve been here five weeks, and we’re only open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
The store is owned and operated by David Miller, and his family and friends. The Millers make a wide variety of baked goods including breads, pies, cakes and cookies, which they prepare on-site.
“We do a white bread, wheat bread, jalapeno cheese bread, and cinnamon raisin bread. So, we’ve got four different kinds of bread, and we do five different kinds of cookies. We do ten different flavors of fried pies. We do six different flavors of big pies. We have an orange juice cake that’s excellent,” said Miller. “We’ve got a whole line of jellies, jams, and relishes.”
The store is loaded with baked goods on the first day of business, and ready for customers with a wide variety of options. Some of the items are already favorites among regular customers.
“There will be probably 150 fried pies sitting [on the shelf], ten different flavors. Those three black shelves over there, they’ll be full of baked goods, from top to bottom. We bake a jalapeno cheese bread, which we sell about 100 loaves a week,” said Miller.
The store carries many refrigerated items such as different kinds of bacon and sausage as well as pulled pork, cheese curds, and yogurt.
“We’ve got the old fashioned roll butter, that is a really hot seller. It’s made from your first cream, which your regular butter is made from whey cream,” said Miller.
Another unique addition to the area is a deli that the store offers. Some of the cheeses have a very unique flavor such as horseradish, and green onion, and a variety of hot cheeses. They also offer most meats that people would expect such as Virginia ham and roast beef to name a couple.
“We have 19 different kinds of meat, and over 20 different kinds of cheese,” said Miller. “We like to run a sale. We’ve got a cajun turkey that’s on sale this week, and we’ve got a muenster cheese that’s on sale this week. The cajun turkey’s $8.49 regular, and the sale is $6.99 so it’s $1.50 a pound cheaper this week. That will run Thursday through Saturday, as long as the product lasts.”
During open hours, customers can also pick up pre-made sandwiches that are made of the products available in the store.
“We usually have three sandwiches. We make a roast beef, and green onion on jalapeno cheese bread. We do a buffalo chicken and desert fire on jalapeno cheese bread, and then we do off the bone ham, and American cheese on white bread,” said Miller.
Many of the items that are on the shelves of the store are imported from the state of Ohio, and Grandview, Texas.
“Amish wedding products come out of Ohio, and is actually an Amish made product,” said Miller.
People travel from far and wide to the store to visit the Miller’s Country Store to purchase their products. Samples are generally available for customers to try some of the items before they purchase them.
“We’ve had people out of Houston, and some of them have relatives in this area. Shreveport, traveling 59 from down south coming up through here, and they’ll swing by here. Se, we’ve actually had quite a few people from quite a few places,” said Miller
The Millers have traveled to Timpson more than one purpose, as well as starting a new business, they are part of a new congregation that has established a church in the area.
“We were part of a church in Grandview, south of Fort Worth. Instead of just growing bigger, and adding on we kind of mission to go to new areas and start churches in new areas,” said Miller. “There were six families that were asked to go start another church, another outreach congregation, and we were one of those six.”
Depending on the time of year, and season the store will also provide locally grown produce.
“Whenever we have produce that’s something that we’re going to try and stick with locally. Otherwise we’ll stick with the items we have. Troyer cheese is a company that specializes in this type of store, and they’re a really good company to work with, with a real good product,” said Miller.
During the holidays the store will take orders for seasonal items. There are also plans for special times so that items can be picked up around the holiday.
“Thanksgiving week what we’ll probably do is have our doors open on Wednesday, and all of those who have ordered can come pick up their order the day before Thanksgiving. Christmas is on Tuesday, so we’ll probably have our doors open Monday for all of those who have ordered and want to pick up,” said Miller.
Miller’s Country Market is open Thursday-Friday from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. is located at 497 First Street, in Timpson and can be reached by calling (936)254-9695.
