A Chireno woman was reportedly involved in an accident on Saturday, July 28, which resulted in her death.
The Timpson Volunteer Ambulance Service and Fire Department were dispatched to an emergency call on CR 4783 south of Timpson where a log had reportedly fallen on a woman.
When EMT’s arrived at the scene they found a woman on the ground with a head injury lying by a large log to which a rope was tied. She was transported by Ambulance to Highway 59 North where a landing zone had been established. When it was discovered that a helicopter was going to take 28 minutes to arrive, she was transported to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital for treatment of her injuries.
According to Stanley Burgay, Constable Precinct 5, Clara Elizabeth Welch, 25, of Chireno received head injuries when a large limb struck her in the head when she was helping him cut the limbs.
Constable Burgay states that they were using a rope tied to the trailer hitch on a pickup truck to lower the limbs, and the rope either broke or came loose from the trailer hitch. This caused the limb to fall and land on Welch.
According to Constable Burgay, Welch succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
The incident remains under investigation.
