It hasn't been the easiest of years for Joaquin ISD athletics after moving up from Class 1A to 2A. However, three members of the Lady Ram girls' basketball team were honored recently by being named to the All-District 20-2A squad.
Joaquin sophomore Whitney Vaughn was named to the first-team, while her teammates, sophomore Jordan Welch and junior Katelynn Cockrell, were second-team members.
Lady Ram freshman Mallory Martinez garnered honorable mention by the league's coaches.
Tatum senior Loren Glezen was named the District 20-2A Most Valuable Player after leading the Eagles to the league's title. Jefferson senior Mistie McCoy was honored as the district's Offensive Most Valuable Player, while senior teammate Kaneisha Gray was honored as the district's Defensive Most Valuable Player.
Tatum freshman Kaylah Starling was named the Newcomer of the Year, and Tatum Head Coach Patricia Nelson and Jefferson Head Coach Natalie Thomas were named the Co-Coaches of the Year.
Joining Vaughn on the All-District 20-2A First-Team include Tatum's Kiana Turner (soph.), Jessica Shans (senior) and Hope Sammons (senior); Waskom's Lauren Parker (senior); Elysian Fields' Kaylee Prather (soph.) and Janice Strange (soph.); Harleton's Hillary Hunter (junior) and Morgan Jones (junior); along with Jefferson's Simmi Wasson (senior).
In addition to Cockrell and Welch, athletes named to the second-team included Elysian Fields' Chesney Spears (soph.) and Kylee Parker (junior); Harleton's Hayley Hunter (fresh.) and Lyndsy Dickeson (senior); Jefferson's Bobbie Cooks (senior) and Carolette Lee (senior); Tatum's Sydni Centers (soph.) and Haley Hartt (junior); and Waskom's Breia Manning (fresh.) and Mallory Alexander (fresh.).
Players named to All-District 20-2A Honorable Mention include: Jefferson's Shiante Durden (senior); Tatum's Sam Gage (senior), Kelsey Gonzalez (senior) and Marti Hatfield (soph.); along with Waskom's Brittany Pearson, JaColbie Hicks and Carrie Dean.
The Academic All-District honorees were also announced. Players honored from Elysian Fields included Kaylee Prather, Chesney Spears, Janice Strange, Kylee Parker, Hannah Crisp, Stormy Higginbotham, Demori Gonzalez, Jane Harris and Kayetlyn Busbey.
Tatum athletes named to the all-academic team were Jessica Shans, Loren Glezen, Kiana Turner, Hope Sammons, Haley Hartt, Sydni Centers, Hannah Covey, Kayla Nickerson, MyEeseia Starling, Jessica Sheperd and Yteshe Fletcher.
Waskom had seven players named academic all-district. Those honored included Mallory Alexander, Breia Manning, Carrie Dean, Brittney Haltom, KaTieya Haynes, JaColbie Hicks and Aubrey Wells.
There were no athletes from Joaquin, Jefferson and Harleton named to the District 20-2A Academic All-District team.
