Shelby County Judge Rick Campbell recently signed a proclamation naming April 2013 as "Confederate Heritage and History Month." According to the proclamation 2011-2015 mark the 150th Anniversary of the war between states, an important anniversary for Texas and Shelby County. Two individuals were arrested on a possession of marijuana charge following a traffic stop on County Road 3267. According to the report from Texas Department of Public Safety State (DPS) Trooper David Hendry, at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Monday, April 15 Texas DPS Trooper Keith Jones was traveling on FM 414 passing CR 3267, when he spotted a white Ford pickup truck without license plates, or inspection sticker.

Emergency crews were dispatched to a wreck involving a Center Independent School District bus that was full of students on Highway 7 Friday afternoon which resulted in several injuries.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) State Trooper Keith Jones, at 4:06 p.m. on Friday, April 26 a 2004 International Center ISD school bus driven by Eva Burns Cooper, 51, of Center was traveling eastbound on State Highway 7 East. As Cooper approached the intersection of FM 1656 a vehicle that was in front of her had slowed or stopped to make a turn.

The Shelbyville High School girls track team has experienced some success this year. That might be putting it lightly considering the Lady Dragons have won their last seven track meets.

Stephany Carter, the girls track coach said that’s a first for any team she has ever coached.

Dwight Preston is preparing for his annual football camp. This is his 22nd year to run the camp and he’s excited and says he wants to help kids learn the necessary skills to be a good athlete.

The Center Lady ‘Riders season didn’t end how they would’ve preferred Friday night when the Jasper Lady Bulldogs spoiled it by beating them 15-4. The Lady ‘Riders finish the season with a district record of 2-9.

Six Shelby County, Texans residents have been arrested in connection with a drug trafficking conspiracy in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney John M. Bales today.
A 13-count indictment was returned by a federal grand jury on Apr. 17, 2013 charging the following individuals with federal gun and drug crimes:
Lakeva Shillette Hill, a/k/a Sugar Momma, 35; Lester Earl Pitts, 48; Vincent Jermaine Lathan, a/k/a Reed Cartwright, 36; Cornelius Vansharles Gray, 36; Anthony Gene Chumbley, 46; and Andrae Demarkqudell Pegues, a/k/a Mark, 33.

The City of Center and the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce invites the public to join them on Saturday, April 27 for the 10th Annual Center Fly-In & Air Show in Center, Texas at the Center Municipal Airport. Gates open at 10 a.m. with free admission.

The Center Police Department is seeking assistance in locating a suspect who is believed to have stolen a debit card and used it at several locations in the area and out of state.
According to Center Police Detective Joey Haley, the suspect has been to six ATMs in Center and one in Mansfield where she used a debit card that did not belong to her. She also used it once at “The Korean Shop” on Shelbyville Street in Center.

A construction zone accident on Highway 84 in Joaquin occurred at approximately 3:40 p.m. Monday afternoon. According to a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) report, Stuart Ray Lowe, 59, of Joaquin was traveling westbound in a white 2002 Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck owned by Joaquin ISD.

The Center City Council met at the John D. Windham Civic Center on Monday, April 8 and approved a contract with BuyBoard with Landscape Unlimited for installation of turf and site work for softball fields at the Center Park expansion/softball complex. Chad Nehring, City Manager, stated that there are several different ways that the city can procure construction services.

Students at Shelbyville ISD participated in a "Recess Relay" Relay for Life walk and balloon released on Friday, April 12. Students are seen in the above photo as they released a large number of balloons into the sky.

Bloomin’ on the Square blossomed beautifully this past Saturday with various local vendors and displays but also a beautiful spring day. The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce provided yet another fun filled event for families to come out and enjoy. Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) were on hand as April is Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month.

Larry Hume was presented with the Distinguished Service Award by John Howard, 2012 Distinguished Service Award recipient, at the 91st Annual Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Banquet held at the John D. Windham Civic Center on Thursday, April 11.
“[Larry Hume] keeps the military history of Shelby County alive, and with his leadership we are a better community and we do appreciate, thank and salute the service that so many have given the United State of America,” said Howard.

The Shelby County Commissioner’s approved an amendment at their recent meeting held on Monday, April 8 of the Shelby County law enforcement policy manual concerning overtime. This amendment affects how overtime is calculated at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department.

Distracted drivers are cruising out of control on roadways far and wide. So much that the Texas Department of Transportation, AT&T and Cellular One have started campaigns to bring awareness to the dangers of distracted driving.
April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and so TxDOT is looking to educate Texans on just how dangerous it is to text and drive or even answer a phone call while driving.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department is searching for a stolen lawn mower, which was taken sometime between Wednesday afternoon, April 10 and early morning Thursday, April 11.
During that time the mower, a 2010 SCAG mower Wildcat, was stolen from the residence of Michael Bill Taylor, located at 4530 FM 417 West by Clever Creek. The mower is valued at $3,500 and the serial number is STWC61V/26KA/LC.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Kurtes Lawrence took a report of a burglary and theft incident that took place in Joaquin on Sunday March 3. It was reported that a 9.8 horse power Mercury boat motor along with several fishing rods and reels, as well as an oxygen tank and acetylene gauge with a 50 foot hose had been stolen from the residence of Marion and Dewana Jackson.

Entries are now being accepted for the Annual What-A-Melon Festival Logo Design Contest. Logo design entries must be at least 8.5 inches by 11 inches and limited to no more than four (4) colors (including black).
Entries must include the following elements in the design: 1) What-A-Melon Festival; 2) Center, Texas; 3) July 11, 12 and 13, 2013
All designs must be original, and the winning design will become the property of the What-A-Melon Festival. Pictures will not be accepted.

The newly renovated Shelby Savings Bank and its board members welcomed guests and customers to their open house ribbon cutting this past Sunday. Shelby Savings Bank president and COO Will Lucas opened the ceremony by encouraging everyone to take a look around at the expansion and thanked everyone for their support.
“It took a lot of people to make this happen,” Lucas said.
Since the early days when the bank officially opened as Shelby County Savings Association in July of 1982, customers have witnessed a lot of growth along the way.
