Tuesday night the Lady ‘Riders softball team saw several ups and downs, but in the long run the ups outweighed the downs the as Center beat Diboll 11-8.

Center Roughriders head baseball coach David Sheppard has been waiting for his team to show up big offensively and that’s exactly what he saw happen Tuesday night as his team defeated the Huntington Red Devils 13-2 in five innings.

Joe Morris of Huxley was joined by his two cousins, Rick Cook from Wisconsin and Rod Cook from California, as well as his brother-in-law, David Cockrell from White Oak as the four of them caught a 73 pound catfish at the end of March. The four of them took part in an annual fishing camp for the third year at Huxley Bay Marina.

Uncle Willy’s Redneck Mafia cooking team was the People’s Choice at the “Go Hog Wild Cook-Off” sponsored by the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce which was held at the Wulf Shopping Center on Saturday, April 6.
The event started on Friday night with a 42 competition held at Somebrero’s Mexican Grill & Cantina, and the final rounds were held under the main tent during the event. The winners of the 42 competition were the team of David Koonce and Will Lucas.

Another page was written in the annals of Shelby County History on Friday, April 5, as Roughrider Stadium was the venue for a local Special Olympics Competition.
While these local competitions have been going on for more than 20 years and have been hosted all over East Texas, this is the first time that a local competition has been hosted in Center.
Athletes from Broaddus, Center, Lufkin, and Lufkin State School participated in the Track and Field portion of the competition.

Shelby Savings Bank held an Open House for their new expanded facility from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 7. to the right of center, James Campbell prepares to cut the ribbon for the new expansion. SSB welcomed the large crowd attending with delicious refreshements catered by Endless Possibilities.

Shelby County Judge Rick Campbell (second from left) celebrated his birthday with lunch at Pineywoods Friday, April 5 with colleagues from the Courthouse. The Center Police Department dispatched officers to Sundowners located on San Augustine Street early Sunday, April 7 after a report of shots fired was received.
When officers arrived they located Buddy Fountain, 44, of Center having apparently been shot was slumped over the trunk of a vehicle. EMS was dispatched and ACE EMS transported Fountain to Shelby Regional Medical Center.
Fountain succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital by Maxie Eaves, Justice of the Peace Precinct 1.

 

The Timpson Lady Bears saw their bats come alive Friday when they hosted Martinsville, beating the Pirates 17-1 in four innings. The win advances Timpson’s record to 4-3 in district play.

Emily McDonald and Kaylie Bush each scored four runs and Maggie Bush scored three runs.

 

The Joaquin Rams battled the Douglass Indians Friday but came out on the losing end in a 5-4 final.

Will Vaughn pitched six innings for the Rams, throwing 138 pitches and 75 strikes.

Jaclyn Stacy was recently commissioned into the Air Force and a ceremony was held on the Historic 1885 Courthouse at the Veterans Memorial on Monday, April 1.
Members of Stacy’s family and friends were in attendance for the event as well as VFW Post 8904.
Stacy is the daughter of Major Lynda Hernandez, USAF retired, and Sr. Master Sgt. Jack Stacy, USAF retired who were both present and took part during the ceremony.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call on March 29 regarding a incident that occurred at a residence on State Highway 87 South. Upon further investigation the Sheriff’s Department found evidence that an alleged sexual assault of child had taken place. A warrant was issued for the charge of sexual assault of a child (F-2) and Arthur Smith, 61, of Shelbyville was taken into custody at around 8 a.m.
Smith is currently in custody at the Shelby County Jail and his bond as been set at $100,000 per JP5 Jim Powers.

The Tenaha ISD (TISD) Board of Trustees recently met and hired a chief of police as well as a new coach for the TISD Lady Tigers Basketball program.

The Shelby County Children’s Advocacy Center will hold a “Butterfly Release” at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 13 at the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce 3rd Annual “Bloomin’ on the Square” event on the Center downtown historic square.
Last year the children were thrilled and awed by the tiny creatures and waited patiently for the butterflies, who had to rest and exercise their wings, to flutter away. The Butterfly Release is done to bring awareness to the continuing tragedy of child abuse.

“Express Yourself” is the theme for the 47th Annual Small Standard Flower Show to be presented by the Center Garden Club from 12:00 noon until 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 19, at the John D. Windham Civic Center.

Timpson Volunteer Firemen are seen in the above photo escorting Billy Hailey, Timpson Volunteer Fire Chief, to his final resting place at Corinth Cemetery north of Timpson on U.S. Highway 84 on Friday, March 29. Hailey passed away on Wednesday, March 26, and services were held at First Baptist Church Timpson. Fire departments that also attended the funeral include Center, Joaquin, Tenaha, West Shelby, Shelbyville, and Garrison.

The long awaited trial of Lana Sue Calhoun, involving the murder of her brother-in-law Alan Kent Calhoun, has come to an end. Calhoun pleaded guilty on Thursday, March 28 to the murder of Alan which took place on Sept. 22, 2009.
The judge presiding over the case is Charles “Brick” Dickerson, 123rd Judicial District Court Judge. As a result of Calhoun’s plea, she will be incarcerated in the Texas Department Of Criminal Justice Institutional Division for 30 years.

A record number of vendors and a large number of attendees were on hand for the 6th Annual Health and Fitness Fair Thursday, March 28 at the Windham Civic Center.
Hosted by the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, the event was free to the public and the vendors gave away many door prizes during the hours of 9 a.m to 1 p.m., when the event closed.

Shelby Savings Bank is celebrating the completion of an extensive 8,000-square-foot expansion project at its main location at 111 Selma Street in Center with an Open House, Sunday, April 7, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The public is invited to see the updates while enjoying refreshments and visiting with the Shelby Savings Bank employees.
Several years of solid growth made it necessary for Shelby Savings Bank to expand its main location, and the expansion will allow the bank to add new positions and better serve customers, bank officials said.

This release is to confirm the arrest of Nick Morale, 56, of Terrell, Texas. Mr. Morale was arrested on April 2, 2013, by the Texas Rangers on one charge of Terroristic Threat (Texas Penal Code 22.07). Mr. Morale was arraigned this morning following his arrest and is being held in the Kaufman County Jail on $1,000,000 bond.

Center ISD is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for student, staff and visitors. In order to accomplish this, the District is implementing a visitor management system at all campuses beginning on Monday, April 1. This system, called Raptor, will replace paper-based logs and is capable of scanning IDs, producing visitor badges and checking all visitors against registered sex offender databases. The overall goal is to better control access to all CISD campuses thus providing enhanced safety for our students and staff.

Shelby County citizens celebrated Easter over the past week- end and New Life Church had a turnout of 102 children plus adults for their Annual Easter Celebration on Sunday, March 31. The rainy weather held off and everyone was able to gather a great many eggs and have hot dogs outside of the church while they en- joyed music and ministry inside.
