The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce announces that reservations are now being accepted for the 91st Annual Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Banquet will be held on Thursday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Windham Civic Center. The keynote speaker will be Lieutenant Commander Leif Babin of the United States Navy Reserve.
Leif Babin is a highly decorated U.S. Navy SEAL officer and combat veteran that deployed three times to Iraq earning a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. Leif is a native of Southeast Texas and a 1998 U.S. Naval Academy graduate.

The Center Fire Department responded to a grass fire on CR 4314 at approximately 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, at the residence of Steven Andrusick. According to Center Fire Chief Keith Byndom, Andrusick had been burning some logs when the fire got out of control, started a grass fire, and burned his tractor. The fire burned several acres of land. Firemen were able to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading any further.

Two single-vehicle crashes occurred within eight hours of each other on Tuesday and Wednesday with fatal results for one driver and a fire for another.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety State TxDPS Trooper Keith Jones, at approximately 4 a.m. an unnamed 32-year-old, of Sierra Ventana Monterrey, Mexico was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 96 North in a white 1999 Ford Econoline passenger van when the van exited the roadway and struck multiple objects.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating counterfeit bills which have been used in the county at different businesses within the county.
Shelby County Sheriff’s Investigator D.J. Dickerson is currently leading the inquiry into these incidents.

Terry Allen and W.I. Davis presented a report about the benefits to a Ground Water Conservation District to the Center City Council at the meeting on Monday, March 11 at the Windham Civic Center.
Allen pointed out the following statistics about the availability of both groundwater and surface water in Shelby County:
Groundwater Total Available Supply
• Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer (Neches Basin) – 5,346 acre/ft;
• Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer (Sabine Basin) – 7,404 acre/ft.

The annual “Fun for Funds” Scholarship Fundraiser auction will be broadcast Tuesday evening, March 19 starting at 6 p.m. from the John D. Windham Civic Center in Center.

Shelby County Chamber of Commerce is soliciting nominations from residents of Shelby County for the Young Citizen of the Year and the Distinguished Service Award. The deadline for nominations is Tuesday, March 19. Written nominations, including additional letters of support regarding the qualifications of the nominee, should be sent to the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, 100 Courthouse Square, A-101, Center, Texas 75935.

Equallia Y Malone will be in Center Saturday, March 16, from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Windham Civic Center to present the new book The Message, which Ms. Malone co-authored with DeQuincy X. Stanberry.
This inspirational book delivers a profound message which emphasizes how God desires that people should live.
The authors, Equallia Y. Malone and DeQuincy X. Stanberry, share their own life stories and tell how God revived and saved them of near-death experiences.

With a win Thursday afternoon at home, the Shelbyville Dragons have started off district play 2-0 after defeating the Martinsville Pirates 13-1.

The Dragons batted around in the bottom of the first inning where they scored their first eight runs.

Steve Campbell of Center had four sons go through Center High School where they all played baseball. Now that they’ve all moved on he helps other young kids by giving lessons. He has a batting cage outside of his house where he teaches the fundamentals of the game, whether it’s hitting, pitching, fielding or sliding.

 

This Sunday is selection Sunday and I can’t wait. I feel like a kid at Christmas. Instead of looking forward to opening presents, I’m anxious to get a hold of a bracket. Instead of shaking the presents under the tree, I’m reading up on what the experts have to say and keeping a close eye on conference tournaments to see how the NCAA might turn out.

Tuesday’s game between the Shelbyville Dragons and the Tenaha Tigers baseball teams was originally scheduled to take place at Tenaha High School but was moved to Shelbyville because of poor field conditions. Despite the fact it was at Shelbyville, the Dragons played as the visitors. The Dragons came away with a 24-0 win over the Tigers in five innings.

The Center Lady ‘Riders softball team was unable to squeeze out a win at home when it played host to the Hudson Lady Hornets Tuesday night, falling 16-0 as the game was called after five innings.

The trial of Lana Sue Calhoun for the alleged murder of her brother-in-law is gearing up to start, but not in Shelby County. As per a request to change venues made by Jane Starnes, Assistant Attorney General, and District Attorney pro tem to prosecute the case, in a letter to Judge Charles Dickerson, 123rd District Court.
According to court documents, following a Feb. 27 conference between the prosecution, defense, and Judge Dickerson, Starnes made a request by letter on March 4 for the venue change to Panola County.

An orange glow outlined the southern horizon of the City of Timpson on Sunday evening alerting neighbors that a fire was blazing at a nearby residence on Timpson Street. The Timpson Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the residence belonging to Kim Skinner at 7:56 p.m. on Sunday, March 10 and when they arrived what they found was a fireball that once resembled a house.
What was once a home painted yellow had become a bright orange tornado as the fire engulfed the home and swirled on the south side as the wind blew from the north.

Center, Joaquin and Shelbyville high schools all took part in the Garrison baseball tournament this weekend and now look to play against district opponents Tuesday.

The CHS Powerlifting team sent nine regional qualifiers to Rusk on March 7 to compete in the Reg 3 Div 2 Regional Championship. 

 

The 22A All District basketball team was announced this week and Tenaha had two players named in the top categories. Ashlee Ray, a senior at Tenaha High School, was named as the Offensive Player of the Year in the girls division. 

The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce salutes the accomplishments of the talented teachers throughout the county’s school districts.  The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce will host a Teacher Appreciation reception on Wednesday, March 20 at the Windham Civic Center in Center. This is a time when gratitude and appreciation is expressed to the educators throughout the county.  Nominees for Teacher of the Year from the Shelby County School Campuses are:

Two suspects are being sought by the Center Police Department in connection with a bold smash and grab theft which took place at the Center Walmart.
According to Center Police Detective Joey Haley, three black males entered the Walmart store located at 810 Hurst Street at approximately 11:24 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6.

A Shelby County Jury in the 123rd District Court was unable to come to a decision on Thursday, March 7 involving an aggravated sexual assault of a child case, which has been building since 2011. The jury was hopelessly deadlocked at 11-1 with 11 in favor of a guilty conviction, and one unable to make a decision in favor of guilt.
William Howard Sanford was the accused in the case, and a relative is the alleged victim. Both were residents in Timpson at the time that the alleged acts occurred.

The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office has gained a new “legal eagle” in Robert Scott who has been hired at the First Assistant District Attorney.
He began work in Shelby County the day after Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 21 and has been a part of the District Attorney staff for a month-and-a-half.
Scott is 29 and was born and raised in Houston. He undertook his undergraduate studies at San Marcus State University (formerly Southwest Texas State University) where he majored in journalism.

Shirley Brittain, ATT/TELCOM Pioneer Life Member, of Shelbyville joined nearly 100 Texas cancer advocates in standing up for cancer patients and survivors at the American Cancer Society Cancer Action (ACS CAN) Lobby Day Feb. 6 in Austin.
Advocates met with legislators and staff to make the case for cancer-fighting priorities:
• Smoke-Free Texas;
• Program reforms and funding for the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas; and

The Healthcare committee of the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce is inviting the public to the 6th Annual Health and Fitness Fair to be held on Thursday, March 28 at the Windham Civic Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be over 30 vendors at the free event.
The Health and Fitness Fair’s purpose is to educate Shelby County about health care resources available in the area and about their personal health.
