A Shelby County Jury in the 123rd District Court was unable to come to a decision on Thursday, March 7 involving an aggravated sexual assault of a child case, which has been building since 2011. The jury was hopelessly deadlocked at 11-1 with 11 in favor of a guilty conviction, and one unable to make a decision in favor of guilt.
William Howard Sanford was the accused in the case, and a relative is the alleged victim. Both were residents in Timpson at the time that the alleged acts occurred.

The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office has gained a new “legal eagle” in Robert Scott who has been hired at the First Assistant District Attorney.
He began work in Shelby County the day after Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 21 and has been a part of the District Attorney staff for a month-and-a-half.
Scott is 29 and was born and raised in Houston. He undertook his undergraduate studies at San Marcus State University (formerly Southwest Texas State University) where he majored in journalism.

Shirley Brittain, ATT/TELCOM Pioneer Life Member, of Shelbyville joined nearly 100 Texas cancer advocates in standing up for cancer patients and survivors at the American Cancer Society Cancer Action (ACS CAN) Lobby Day Feb. 6 in Austin.
Advocates met with legislators and staff to make the case for cancer-fighting priorities:
• Smoke-Free Texas;
• Program reforms and funding for the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas; and

The Healthcare committee of the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce is inviting the public to the 6th Annual Health and Fitness Fair to be held on Thursday, March 28 at the Windham Civic Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be over 30 vendors at the free event.
The Health and Fitness Fair’s purpose is to educate Shelby County about health care resources available in the area and about their personal health.

The Shelby County 8th Annual 4-H and FFA Livestock Show was held March 2, 2013 at the Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo Arena. Weigh in of market animals started at 7:30 a.m. and lasted until 9 a.m. The show started at 10 a.m. with Rabbits being judged by Mr. Frank Farrow of Lufkin.

Denise Merriman, Interim Executive Director of the Shelby County Child Advocacy Center, has announced that a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) would be hired for the Center toward the end of 2013.

A group of Christian men, not affiliated with any church, built a ramp on the home of a semi-wheelchair-bound woman on County Road 1024 in Shelby County on Tuesday, March 5.
The group is called “New Destinations” mission, and the group in Panola County has built many ramps for people needing their help in the past few years.
Henry Harrison of Carthage, founding member of the group, stated their mission:

The FBI and local police in Arkansas, Mississippi and Texas are seeking a serial armed bank robber dubbed the “Loan Ranger Bandit.”
During the robberies, the armed man, who does not attempt to disguise his face, displayed a note demanding 20s, 50s and 100s and received an undisclosed amount of money. To date, no one has been physically harmed.

Area youth from several county FFA and 4-H programs in Shelby County converged on Center to compete Saturday. The 2013 Shelby County Livestock Show and sale was held on Saturday, March 2 at the Shelby County Expo and the Grand Champion Steer winner was Ethan Woods, Joaquin FFA. During the evening sale Woods steer sold for $3,750 to XTO.

The 5th Annual Republic of Texas Celebration, hosted by the William Carroll Crawford (WCC) Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas was held from 10 a.m. Saturday, March 2 on the 1885 Historic Courthouse square.
Opening ceremonies started promptly at 10 a.m. with Scout Troop 119 presenting the colors. In the absence of WCC President Elizabeth Pate, Past President Billie Dawson welcomed those in attendance. Shelby County Judge Rick Campbell and Center Mayor David Chadwick gave opening remarks.

The Center Police Department in conjunction with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department has been investigating phone scams in the Shelby County area.
Joey Haley, Center Police Detective, reports that LaDarren Reed, 25, of Center has been arrested and charged in connection with these scams.

The 2nd Annual Princess Ball, benefitting the Shelby County Advocacy Center, was another unqualified success, judging by the turnout and the happy faces of the young “princesses” at the event held in the Windham Civic Center Saturday evening, March 2.
Tickets for the Princess Ball were sold out about a week before the event, a testament to how popular the first ball was in 2012.

The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce announces the “Go Hog Wild Cook-Off” will be held Saturday, April 6 in the south parking lot of Wulf Shopping Center to kick-off the first day of the “Wild Hog Roundup”. $10,000 will be awarded in prize money to registered cook teams.  Cook teams may enter the contest with a $150 registration fee prior to March 25 or $200 after. Cook teams recruiting two first time cook teams prior to March 25 will receive a free registration.

First Lady Anita Perry will join the Texas Historical Commission (THC) for the Texas Main Street Program’s 2013 First Lady’s Tour. The tour is an annual event celebrating Texas Main Street communities and will welcome Childress and San Augustine as new cities as well as Cuero, which is re-entering the program. The schedule includes stops on Thursday, March 28 in Childress from 9:30-10:45 a.m., in San Augustine from 1:30-2:45 p.m. and in Cuero from 5:30-6:45 p.m. Each city will host a brief media reception with the First Lady during the visit.

Shelby County Chamber of Commerce President, Chad Nehring, recently announced that the 91th Annual Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Banquet will be held on Thursday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Windham Civic Center. The keynote speaker will be Lieutenant Commander Leif Babin of the United States Navy Reserve.

The John D. Windham Civic Center was the scene of a Classic Car Show on Thursday, Feb. 28 as members of the Shelby County Cruisers brought their beautifully restored and maintained classic vehicles for viewing by the Center Noon Lions Club.
Lion Leon Aldridge, who is President of the Shelby County Cruisers, was the guest speaker at the luncheon meeting of the Center Noon Lions.

Ruth Yarbrough Hartsfield Bussey, 96, of Timpson was the speaker at the February meeting of the Timpson Genealogical Society at the meeting room of the new Timpson Library.
Mrs. Bussey is a retired teacher, having taught school in the Buena Vista-Prospect, Wilda and Timpson School Districts, before retirement in 1983. She shared humorous stories with the group about traveling to teach over dirt roads.

Two overturned vehicle incidents were seen in the Joaquin area on Tuesday evening which required emergency personnel. Texas Department of Public Safety State Troopers handled the investigation of the incidents and were assisted by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department.

The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, William Carroll Crawford Chapter, will present “The Poisoning at the Wedding” on Friday, March 1 at 7 p.m. in the courtroom of the 1885 Historic Shelby County Courthouse on the Center square. A special wedding reception with cake and punch will follow the play.

A banquet to kick off local preparations for the Ark-La-Tex Go Tell Crusade coming to Center May 5-8 was held Monday, Feb. 25 at the John D. Windham Civic Center.
Evangelist Rick Gage, who will be conducting the May event, was the dynamic speaker at the banquet. Gage walked away from a promising career coaching football in 1986 and surrendered his life to full-time evangelistic ministry. Since that time, he has been conducting evangelistic events around the world and has seen tens of thousands make commitments to the Lord Jesus Christ. (See www.gotellministries.com)

The Healthcare Committee of the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce is inviting the public to the 6th Annual Health and Fitness Fair to be held on Thursday, March 28 at the Windham Civic Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
There will be over 30 vendors at the free event.
The Health and Fitness Fair’s purpose is to educate Shelby County about health care resources available in the area and about their personal health.
There will be a variety of health screenings available and information distributed.

The Shelby County Commissioners Court approved the disbursement of $12,000 to two local child advocacy organizations at their meeting on Monday, Feb. 25.
Clint Porterfield, Shelby County Auditor, addressed the court and reminded everyone about three accounts that were put into effect in the fall of 2012. Funding had been being collected for these funds and needed to be put into their own accounts so that they could be used for their intended purposes.
