The Joaquin Rams battled the Douglass Indians Friday but came out on the losing end in a 5-4 final.

Will Vaughn pitched six innings for the Rams, throwing 138 pitches and 75 strikes.

Mikel Carter of Shelbyville High School is setting the bar high; literally. The sophomore track star recently jumped 14’1” to break a school record set 41 years ago; by his uncle, Mac Carter.

The Joaquin Rams played host to the Timpson Bears Tuesday night, winning 10-0 in five innings.

Jordan Powdrill was the winning pitcher as he allowed only two hits. Joaquin out-hit Timpson 9-2.

The Joaquin Lady Rams served up a shutout Tuesday night when they played host to Shelbyville, beating the Lady Dragons 12-0 in four and a half innings.

The Center Roughriders baseball team tried rallying back against Central at home Friday night but came up short in a 4-3 final. The loss gives the Roughriders a record of 2-1 in district play and 15-6 overall.

 

Joaquin and Tenaha’s baseball teams went head-to-head on the diamond Saturday, as the Rams came out with a 17-1 win over the first-year Tigers. The game came a close after three innings.

The Rams tacked on their first three runs in the bottom of the first inning.

The Timpson Bears went into extra innings with the Mount Enterprise Wildcats Friday afternoon but fell short in a 9-7 final. The loss gives the Bears a district record of 1-2.

Terrance Brown started on the mound for the Tigers and was later relieved by Hunter Smith. Brown and Ryan Baker each had a home run.

With a win Thursday afternoon at home, the Shelbyville Dragons have started off district play 2-0 after defeating the Martinsville Pirates 13-1.

The Dragons batted around in the bottom of the first inning where they scored their first eight runs.

Steve Campbell of Center had four sons go through Center High School where they all played baseball. Now that they’ve all moved on he helps other young kids by giving lessons. He has a batting cage outside of his house where he teaches the fundamentals of the game, whether it’s hitting, pitching, fielding or sliding.

 

This Sunday is selection Sunday and I can’t wait. I feel like a kid at Christmas. Instead of looking forward to opening presents, I’m anxious to get a hold of a bracket. Instead of shaking the presents under the tree, I’m reading up on what the experts have to say and keeping a close eye on conference tournaments to see how the NCAA might turn out.

Tuesday’s game between the Shelbyville Dragons and the Tenaha Tigers baseball teams was originally scheduled to take place at Tenaha High School but was moved to Shelbyville because of poor field conditions. Despite the fact it was at Shelbyville, the Dragons played as the visitors. The Dragons came away with a 24-0 win over the Tigers in five innings.

The Center Lady ‘Riders softball team was unable to squeeze out a win at home when it played host to the Hudson Lady Hornets Tuesday night, falling 16-0 as the game was called after five innings.

Center, Joaquin and Shelbyville high schools all took part in the Garrison baseball tournament this weekend and now look to play against district opponents Tuesday.

The CHS Powerlifting team sent nine regional qualifiers to Rusk on March 7 to compete in the Reg 3 Div 2 Regional Championship. 

 

The 22A All District basketball team was announced this week and Tenaha had two players named in the top categories. Ashlee Ray, a senior at Tenaha High School, was named as the Offensive Player of the Year in the girls division. 

Jim Bradford announced his resignation at the Shelbyville school board meeting Monday night as head football coach and athletic director.
Bradford spent about seven years at Shelbyville, six of which were as head coach and athletic director.
Prior to arriving at Shelbyville, he coached in San Antonio and Laredo. He’s not quite sure what the next step is but says he has enjoyed his time coaching the Dragons.

The Center Roughriders baseball team opened up district play with an 8-1 over the Carthage Bulldogs at home.

The Center Lady ‘Riders played host to the Carthage Lady Bulldogs to open up district play Tuesday night but fell short 11-0. 

The run rule, which states if one team is up by 10 or more runs after five innings, took effect as the two teams got through five innings.

 

The Center High School tennis team is the region team tennis champion and will head to Abilene for the state championship this coming weekend.

The Roughriders tennis team had the first round bye in the region tournament and defeated Hudson in the second round 10-1. 

The Dallardsville-Big Sandy Wildcats ended the Tenaha Tigers basketball season by shooting lights out from 3-point range as they hit nine shots from beyond the arch. The Wildcats ended the Tigers’ chances of repeating as state champions by defeating Tenaha by a final score of 51-50 at Hudson High School Tuesday night.

The Tenaha Tigers basketball team advanced to the regional quarterfinals round of the playoffs with a 57-54 win over the West Sabine Tigers Friday night at Nacogdoches High School.

Typically tennis isn’t a well-known sport amongst Texas high schools, but the Center tennis team is making too much noise to be ignored. When going head-to-head, the ‘Riders currently hold a record of 10-0-1 and they’re eyeing the state tournament.
