Center High School will be represented at the state track meet this weekend when four Roughriders travel to Austin in hopes of bringing home the hardware. Seniors Darron Bolton, K.J. Garrett, Shaquille Ingram and sophomore Jack Ford will team up in the 4x200 relay.

Two years ago, Chloe Brown, an eighth grader at Joaquin Jr. High, went with her parents to the state track meet in Austin. Now a sophomore, Brown is going back to Austin, but this time as a contestant instead of a spectator. She’ll run the mile and the 400 meter.

The Shelbyville Dragons baseball team saw its season come to an end Thursday when they lost to the Lovelady Lions 5-3 in the bi-district round of the playoff at Stephen F. Austin’s Jaycees Field in Nacogdoches.

The Light and Champion was recently honored with first place in the 2012 North East Texas Press Association (NETPA) - Division 3 - Advertising competition. The award was presented at The Light and Champion newspaper office by Scott McCloud on Tuesday, April 23. ATV fatalities statewide are on the rise as more and more people ride unprotected. Earlier this month, a sophomore student at Center High School was seriously injured in a four-wheeler accident. So with the evergrowing number of fatalities and injuries, it is necessary to address the dangers associated with riding all terrain vehicles. Furthermore, there are some preventive measures that should be taken when riding in order to keep the unthinkable from happening.

The Light and Champion newspaper has seen a few changes lately, as new staff members have been added and some staff members have been moved to new positions, Scott Flowers was recently announced as Editor of The Light and Champion newspaper.
Although this is news to the community, Scott has been working in this position since October 2012 due to a decision made by JoAnna Martin, former Light and Champion Publisher, to give Scott the responsibility of overseeing the newsroom.

The Light and Champions’ newest editorial staff member is no stranger to news. Jeremy Lile (JJ Lyonz) recently worked for Center Broadcasting Company, where he was the News Director for both KQBB and KDET radio stations.
“Jeremy brings a multitude of skills to the table with his background in radio and computer software,” said Dale Buie, Publisher of The Light and Champion. “He will also be working on the expansion of The Light and Champion’s website.”

Entries are now being taken for the Queen, Duchess and Princess contest for the Shelby County Sheriff Posse Rodeo slated for June 7 and 8.
There are three age groups: Queen contestants must be between the ages of 16 and 24; Duchess contestants between 11 and 15, and Princess contestants between 5 and 10 years of age. Age is determined as of Jan. 1.

A single-vehicle crash on Wednesday resulted in injuries to two individuals that were within the vehicle.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper Jimmy Faulkner, at 7:19 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 William Parks, 26, was traveling northbound in a 1996 blue four-door Buick Roadmaster on FM 3471 with passenger Shadondra Jenkins, 29.
Just after Parks traveled through a curve in the roadway he lost conrol of the vehicle and continued on a path to the left.

Distracted drivers are cruising out of control on roadways far and wide. So much that the Texas Department of Transportation, AT&T and Cellular One have started campaigns to bring awareness to the dangers of distracted driving.
April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and so TxDOT is looking to educate Texans on just how dangerous it is to text and drive or even answer a phone call while driving.

The Shelbyville Dragons baseball team completed a season sweep of the Joaquin Rams Friday night with a 9-4 win over their cross-county opponents.

The Dragons out-hit the Rams 11-6. Joaquin committed three errors as Shelbyville committed two errors.

Shelbyville ISD hired Jason Ferguson as its new Athletic Director/Head Football Coach last week. Ferguson was most recently the AD/Head Coach at De Leon from 2008-2011 and then at Memphis where he was the AD/Head Coach from 2011-2012 and he was the defensive coordinator at Rogers in 2012. Ferguson, a native of Pilot Point, Texas, grew up and takes pride in Texas high school football.

Joe Morris of Huxley was joined by his two cousins, Rick Cook from Wisconsin and Rod Cook from California, as well as his brother-in-law, David Cockrell from White Oak as the four of them caught a 73 pound catfish at the end of March. The four of them took part in an annual fishing camp for the third year at Huxley Bay Marina.

The Joaquin Rams battled the Douglass Indians Friday but came out on the losing end in a 5-4 final.

Will Vaughn pitched six innings for the Rams, throwing 138 pitches and 75 strikes.

The Timpson Lady Bears saw their bats come alive Friday when they hosted Martinsville, beating the Pirates 17-1 in four innings. The win advances Timpson’s record to 4-3 in district play.

Emily McDonald and Kaylie Bush each scored four runs and Maggie Bush scored three runs.

Jaclyn Stacy was recently commissioned into the Air Force and a ceremony was held on the Historic 1885 Courthouse at the Veterans Memorial on Monday, April 1.
Members of Stacy’s family and friends were in attendance for the event as well as VFW Post 8904.
Stacy is the daughter of Major Lynda Hernandez, USAF retired, and Sr. Master Sgt. Jack Stacy, USAF retired who were both present and took part during the ceremony.

The long awaited trial of Lana Sue Calhoun, involving the murder of her brother-in-law Alan Kent Calhoun, has come to an end. Calhoun pleaded guilty on Thursday, March 28 to the murder of Alan which took place on Sept. 22, 2009.
The judge presiding over the case is Charles “Brick” Dickerson, 123rd Judicial District Court Judge. As a result of Calhoun’s plea, she will be incarcerated in the Texas Department Of Criminal Justice Institutional Division for 30 years.

Opening arguments were heard in Panola County in open court for the Alan Kent Calhoun murder trial on Wednesday, March 20 with Jane Starnes, District Attorney pro tem, presenting the case before the court.
Lana Sue Calhoun (Susie) is the defendant and she has been charged with the alleged murder of Alan Kent Calhoun on Sept. 22, 2009 as well as injury to a disabled person.
