The 8th Annual Relay for Life event is in the books, as teams walked Friday night for many reasons. Many teams walked to celebrate those who are Cancer survivors. Some walked to support those who continue to fight Cancer. While others walked to honor the memory of a family member or friend.

Tornadoes ravaged parts of North Texas and Oklahoma this week with Oklahoma City receiving a large amount of damage, as well as a large death toll resulting from the tornado which swept through the area. Emergency crews are still working to locate those that were injured and crews are working to remove debris. Shelby County has not had to deal with a tornado incident of that magnitude, but what would you do in the instance that a tornado did hit the area, and how would you prepare yourself?

The Shelby County commissioners approved the closure of a portion of roadway at their recent meeting on Monday, May 13.
Sean Permenter spoke with the commissioners about the closure of 4,400 feet of CR 3706. Permenter stated that he was unaware until the morning of the meeting that the roadway was being considered for closing.
When Permenter first started living on the road in 1983, he says that no one lived there all the way through to FM 699. He said that at this time there are 19 people living down the road with seven houses off the roadway.

Center Firefighters were busy most of the day Friday into early Saturday morning, with a residential house fire on Highway 87 North.
The initial call came in around 11:10 a.m., when the owner Irene Morris smelled smoke and heard a popping sound. Ms. Morris immediately called the fire department and was able to get out of the house unharmed.

Gov. Rick Perry has appointed William Lucas, president and chief operating officer of Shelby Savings Bank, to the Finance Commission of Texas for a term to expire Feb. 1, 2018.
The commission ensures banks, savings institutions, consumer credit grantors and other state-regulated financial entities operate responsibly to enhance the financial well-being of Texans, and is responsible for overseeing the Texas Department of Banking (TXDOB), the Department of Savings and Mortgage Lending (SML), and the Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner (OCCC).

A 39-year-old Center, Texas man has been sentenced to federal prison for drug trafficking violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney John M. Bales today.

Danny Len Lindsey pleaded guilty on Mar. 1, 2013, to possession with intent to manufacture methamphetamine and was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison today by U.S. District Judge Leonard E. Davis.

The Joaquin Lady Rams softball team saw its season come to an end in the third game of a best-of-three game series Saturday after getting knocked out of the playoffs in the Regional Semi-finals by Grapeland at Cushing High School.

Shelby County Judge Rick Campbell proclaimed May 17 the Eight Annual Relay for Life of Shelby County Cancer Survivor Day on Thursday, May 16 at the Shelby County Courthouse. Present for the event were several members of the Shelby County Relay for Life Committee, as well as survivors, volunteers, caregivers. The Relay for Life event is being held at the Shelby County Expo Center on State Highway 7 East on Friday, May 17 through Saturday, May 18.

The membership of the Texas Bankers Association elected officers for the 2013-2014 fiscal year at its annual convention in Austin May 3. Elected were Chairman Ignacio Urrabazo Jr., president and CEO of Commerce Bank, Laredo; Vice Chair John Snider, vice chairman and CEO of Shelby Savings Bank, SSB in Center; and Treasurer Ken Burgess Jr., chairman of FirstCapital Bank of Texas in Midland. The officers’ terms are from June 1 through May 31, 2014.

Joaquin’s softball team’s four seniors know a thing or two about adversity. They’ve been through it all together. They’ve experienced the tough times but they’re well aware that hard work brings perseverance. In fact, they’re seeing that first hand as they prepare for the Grapeland Sandies in the Regional Semifinals.

Two years ago, Chloe Brown, an eighth grader at Joaquin Jr. High, went with her parents to the state track meet in Austin. Now a sophomore, Brown is going back to Austin, but this time as a contestant instead of a spectator. She’ll run the mile and the 400 meter.

The award was presented at The Light and Champion newspaper office by Scott McCloud on Tuesday, April 23. ATV fatalities statewide are on the rise as more and more people ride unprotected. Earlier this month, a sophomore student at Center High School was seriously injured in a four-wheeler accident. So with the evergrowing number of fatalities and injuries, it is necessary to address the dangers associated with riding all terrain vehicles. Furthermore, there are some preventive measures that should be taken when riding in order to keep the unthinkable from happening.

The Light and Champion newspaper has seen a few changes lately, as new staff members have been added and some staff members have been moved to new positions, Scott Flowers was recently announced as Editor of The Light and Champion newspaper.
Although this is news to the community, Scott has been working in this position since October 2012 due to a decision made by JoAnna Martin, former Light and Champion Publisher, to give Scott the responsibility of overseeing the newsroom.

Emergency crews were dispatched to a wreck involving Center Independent School District bus number 13, which was traveling on Highway 7 full of students Friday afternoon and resulted in several injuries.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) State Trooper Keith Jones, at 4:06 p.m. on Friday, April 26 a 2004 International Center ISD school bus driven by Eva Burns Cooper, 51, of Center was traveling eastbound on State Highway 7 East. As Cooper approached the intersection of FM 1656 a vehicle that was in front of her had slowed or stopped to make a turn.

The Shelby County Commissioners approved the closing of County Road 3575 at their regular meeting on Monday, April 22. Travis Rodgers, Commissioner for Precinct 3, explained that this road is in Precinct 3.
He said that signatures from landowners connecting to the roadway have been acquired authorizing the closure, but that they were unable to locate one landowner who has property adjacent to the roadway.

The 11 and 12 year old baseball team known as the Rockies, is coached by two determined ladies who are digging in and looking to “Go Yard.” The big surprise though as of late, is that Head Coach Daphne LaRock and Assistant Shannon Denby have never even coached a team or played baseball. However, before their game Friday night, the Rockies proudly held a 4-1 record.

A farewell party was held for Claudann Jones, County Extension Agent, at the Shelby County Courthouse Monday, April 22 on the 2nd floor. County officials, friends and coworkers were present to wish Jones well on her transition to the Nacogdoches County Extension office. All kinds of objects were seen flying around at the 10th Annual Center Fly-in held at the Center Municipal Airport on Saturday, April 27. A lawn mower was even seen to take to the skies and fly around the area to the amazement of many.

The Light and Champions’ newest editorial staff member is no stranger to news. Jeremy Lile (JJ Lyonz) recently worked for Center Broadcasting Company, where he was the News Director for both KQBB and KDET radio stations.
“Jeremy brings a multitude of skills to the table with his background in radio and computer software,” said Dale Buie, Publisher of The Light and Champion. “He will also be working on the expansion of The Light and Champion’s website.”
