The Shelbyville High School girls track team has experienced some success this year. That might be putting it lightly considering the Lady Dragons have won their last seven track meets.

Stephany Carter, the girls track coach said that’s a first for any team she has ever coached.

Students at Shelbyville ISD participated in a "Recess Relay" Relay for Life walk and balloon released on Friday, April 12. Students are seen in the above photo as they released a large number of balloons into the sky.

The Shelbyville Dragons got one step closer to a playoff appearance Tuesday night when they defeated the Timpson Bears on the road 14-4.

Last Thursday, Shelbyville High School hosted a District 22 track meet in which four Shelby County high schools came together and competed against one another. Joaquin, Tenaha and Timpson’s boys and girls took part in the events. Below are the results for the boys events. See Friday’s issue for the results of the girls results.

The Shelbyville Dragons baseball team completed a season sweep of the Joaquin Rams Friday night with a 9-4 win over their cross-county opponents.

The Dragons out-hit the Rams 11-6. Joaquin committed three errors as Shelbyville committed two errors.

Shelbyville ISD hired Jason Ferguson as its new Athletic Director/Head Football Coach last week. Ferguson was most recently the AD/Head Coach at De Leon from 2008-2011 and then at Memphis where he was the AD/Head Coach from 2011-2012 and he was the defensive coordinator at Rogers in 2012. Ferguson, a native of Pilot Point, Texas, grew up and takes pride in Texas high school football.

Mikel Carter of Shelbyville High School is setting the bar high; literally. The sophomore track star recently jumped 14’1” to break a school record set 41 years ago; by his uncle, Mac Carter.

The Joaquin Lady Rams served up a shutout Tuesday night when they played host to Shelbyville, beating the Lady Dragons 12-0 in four and a half innings.

With a win Thursday afternoon at home, the Shelbyville Dragons have started off district play 2-0 after defeating the Martinsville Pirates 13-1.

The Dragons batted around in the bottom of the first inning where they scored their first eight runs.

Tuesday’s game between the Shelbyville Dragons and the Tenaha Tigers baseball teams was originally scheduled to take place at Tenaha High School but was moved to Shelbyville because of poor field conditions. Despite the fact it was at Shelbyville, the Dragons played as the visitors. The Dragons came away with a 24-0 win over the Tigers in five innings.

Jim Bradford announced his resignation at the Shelbyville school board meeting Monday night as head football coach and athletic director.
Bradford spent about seven years at Shelbyville, six of which were as head coach and athletic director.
Prior to arriving at Shelbyville, he coached in San Antonio and Laredo. He’s not quite sure what the next step is but says he has enjoyed his time coaching the Dragons.

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons and the Tenaha Lady Tigers went head-to-head at Joaquin High School Friday night as the Lady Tigers pulled out the 41-34 win to earn second place in the district going into the playoffs.

The Joaquin Rams went head-to-head in another cross-county battle on the road against the Shelbyville Dragons Friday night where they came up victorious in a 51-34 final.

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons escaped with a narrow 42-37 win Friday night when they played host to the Joaquin Lady Rams on senior night.

Shelbyville jumped to a quick lead in the first quarter but Joaquin was the team to catch fire in the second quarter where they took a 22-19 lead going into halftime.

Six 3-pointers from Wyatt Hairgrove helped lift the Joaquin Rams to a 78-71 win over the Shelbyville Dragons Tuesday night. After Tuesday night, the Dragons hold a district record of 0-2 while the Rams are 1-1.

Just a few nights after Joaquin lost to Tenaha in a 38-36 final, the Lady Rams found themselves in another nail-biter, this time at home to another cross-county team, the Shelbyville Lady Dragons. Joaquin came away with the 38-37 win Tuesday night.

Fans who attended Tuesday night’s game between the Tenaha Lady Tigers and the Shelbyville Lady Dragons saw a nail-biter as the Lady Tigers snuck away with a 5 point victory, 43-38.

Football season might be over for the Shelbyville Dragons but many members of their football team have earned All-District honors.

The Dragons came out firing on all cylinders Tuesday night when they knocked off 65-54.

C.J. Watson dropped in 17 points to lead the Dragons in scoring and Marcus Edwards scored 14. James Bradford came away with 7 points.

The high school football playoffs are already here as four out of Shelby County’s five teams have extended their seasons into the playoffs. The Joaquin Rams and Tenaha Tigers won their districts and will have a bye for the first round. Meanwhile, the Center Roughriders will travel to Lindale to take on the Fairfield Eagles while the Timpson Bears will take on the West Sabine Tigers.
