The Joaquin Lady Rams and Alto Lady Jackets went back and forth in a three-game series with the Alto Lady Jackets in the Regional Quarterfinals this weekend. The Lady Rams ultimately came out winning in dramatic fashion.

Like many other high school students around the state of Texas and handful of others in Shelby County, Timpson’s Jakelia Caraway is Austin-bound as she’ll represent the Lady Bears in the 100-meter dash.

Caraway is no stranger to the state track meet as she has been there twice before.

Friday night saw the Lady Rams finish what they started Thursday night by defeating the Colmesneil Lady Dogs 3-2 in the second of a best-of-three game series.

Center High School will be represented at the state track meet this weekend when four Roughriders travel to Austin in hopes of bringing home the hardware. Seniors Darron Bolton, K.J. Garrett, Shaquille Ingram and sophomore Jack Ford will team up in the 4x200 relay.

Two years ago, Chloe Brown, an eighth grader at Joaquin Jr. High, went with her parents to the state track meet in Austin. Now a sophomore, Brown is going back to Austin, but this time as a contestant instead of a spectator. She’ll run the mile and the 400 meter.

The Shelbyville Dragons baseball team saw its season come to an end Thursday when they lost to the Lovelady Lions 5-3 in the bi-district round of the playoff at Stephen F. Austin’s Jaycees Field in Nacogdoches.

The Joaquin Rams baseball team played its final game of the season Monday when it played host to Chireno, beating the Owls 16-4 in four and a half innings.

Each of the first two innings saw the Rams score 7 runs to jump to a quick 14-0 lead.

Eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning helped the Lady Rams seal up their victory in the bi-district round of the playoffs when they played host to the Mount Enterprise Lady Cats Monday night.

The Shelbyville High School girls track team has experienced some success this year. That might be putting it lightly considering the Lady Dragons have won their last seven track meets.

Stephany Carter, the girls track coach said that’s a first for any team she has ever coached.

The Center Lady ‘Riders season didn’t end how they would’ve preferred Friday night when the Jasper Lady Bulldogs spoiled it by beating them 15-4. The Lady ‘Riders finish the season with a district record of 2-9.

Dwight Preston is preparing for his annual football camp. This is his 22nd year to run the camp and he’s excited and says he wants to help kids learn the necessary skills to be a good athlete.

Last Thursday, Shelbyville High School hosted a District 22 track meet in which four Shelby County high schools came together and competed against one another. Joaquin, Tenaha and Timpson’s boys and girls took part in the events. Below are the results for the boys events. See Friday’s issue for the results of the girls results.

The Center Roughriders baseball team defeated the Central Bulldogs Friday night in a 12-3 final. Eric Vaughn went three for three with a double and four RBI. Josh Burns and Taylor Tomlin each went two for five. Caiden Rainbolt went two for three with a double, two RBI and was walked twice.

The Shelbyville Dragons baseball team completed a season sweep of the Joaquin Rams Friday night with a 9-4 win over their cross-county opponents.

The Dragons out-hit the Rams 11-6. Joaquin committed three errors as Shelbyville committed two errors.

Shelbyville ISD hired Jason Ferguson as its new Athletic Director/Head Football Coach last week. Ferguson was most recently the AD/Head Coach at De Leon from 2008-2011 and then at Memphis where he was the AD/Head Coach from 2011-2012 and he was the defensive coordinator at Rogers in 2012. Ferguson, a native of Pilot Point, Texas, grew up and takes pride in Texas high school football.

Tuesday night the Lady ‘Riders softball team saw several ups and downs, but in the long run the ups outweighed the downs the as Center beat Diboll 11-8.

Joe Morris of Huxley was joined by his two cousins, Rick Cook from Wisconsin and Rod Cook from California, as well as his brother-in-law, David Cockrell from White Oak as the four of them caught a 73 pound catfish at the end of March. The four of them took part in an annual fishing camp for the third year at Huxley Bay Marina.

Center Roughriders head baseball coach David Sheppard has been waiting for his team to show up big offensively and that’s exactly what he saw happen Tuesday night as his team defeated the Huntington Red Devils 13-2 in five innings.
