Distracted drivers are cruising out of control on roadways far and wide. So much that the Texas Department of Transportation, AT&T and Cellular One have started campaigns to bring awareness to the dangers of distracted driving.
April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and so TxDOT is looking to educate Texans on just how dangerous it is to text and drive or even answer a phone call while driving.

Last Thursday, Shelbyville High School hosted a District 22 track meet in which four Shelby County high schools came together and competed against one another. Joaquin, Tenaha and Timpson’s boys and girls took part in the events. Below are the results for the boys events. See Friday’s issue for the results of the girls results.

The Tenaha ISD (TISD) Board of Trustees recently met and hired a chief of police as well as a new coach for the TISD Lady Tigers Basketball program.

A joint operation between the Center Police Department (CPD) and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department (SCSD) in Tenaha resulted in the arrest of six suspects on drug charges. A warrant was served on a residence located at 2488 CR 4366 in Tenaha at around 7 p.m. on Monday, March 17.
Authorities with the CPD and the SCSD entered the residence of George Naylor Bowers and began searching for drugs and other drug evidence.

The City of Tenaha has named Gina Breseman as a new Deputy City Marshal to the City Marshal’s Office. The event took place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 21 with Mayor Orinthia Johnson performing the ceremony of swearing her in to her position with the city.
Breseman has worked with several different agencies and started her law enforcement career in 2006. She also has family here which allows her to stay anchored in Shelby County.

Several individuals were injured and were transported to the hospital following a four vehicle wreck on U.S. Highway 59 (Hwy. 59) North on Sunday, March 17. Multiple agencies responded to the scene to assist the injured.
According to Tenaha Deputy City Marshal Jake Metcalf, at 9:59 p.m. a tan 2006 Nissan Altima driven by Melvin Williams, of Shreveport wth passenger Derrick Williams, 32, of Logansport exited from FM 2141 onto Hwy. 59 northbound.

Joaquin and Tenaha’s baseball teams went head-to-head on the diamond Saturday, as the Rams came out with a 17-1 win over the first-year Tigers. The game came a close after three innings.

The Rams tacked on their first three runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Tuesday’s game between the Shelbyville Dragons and the Tenaha Tigers baseball teams was originally scheduled to take place at Tenaha High School but was moved to Shelbyville because of poor field conditions. Despite the fact it was at Shelbyville, the Dragons played as the visitors. The Dragons came away with a 24-0 win over the Tigers in five innings.

The 22A All District basketball team was announced this week and Tenaha had two players named in the top categories. Ashlee Ray, a senior at Tenaha High School, was named as the Offensive Player of the Year in the girls division.

The Shelby County 8th Annual 4-H and FFA Livestock Show was held March 2, 2013 at the Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo Arena. Weigh in of market animals started at 7:30 a.m. and lasted until 9 a.m. The show started at 10 a.m. with Rabbits being judged by Mr. Frank Farrow of Lufkin.

The Dallardsville-Big Sandy Wildcats ended the Tenaha Tigers basketball season by shooting lights out from 3-point range as they hit nine shots from beyond the arch. The Wildcats ended the Tigers’ chances of repeating as state champions by defeating Tenaha by a final score of 51-50 at Hudson High School Tuesday night.

The Tenaha Tigers basketball team advanced to the regional quarterfinals round of the playoffs with a 57-54 win over the West Sabine Tigers Friday night at Nacogdoches High School.

De’Aaron Roland of Tenaha has been there and done that. More specifically, he has played in three state championship games, two in football and one in basketball. Now as a senior he’s looking to add one more to the list. He said falling to Munday last December in the football State Championship made him hungrier to go back in basketball.

Earthquakes have wreaked havoc on the Timpson area over the past two years and now weather has contributed to further anguish for area residents as a tornado was reported to have been sited north of Timpson.
The City of Timpson issued a Code RED alert on Monday, Feb. 18 at approximately 6:40 p.m. when a tornado had reportedly been sited in the Caledonia area just north of the City of Timpson.

The Old Spanish Trail Ride (OSTR) has once again made the trek through Shelby County as horseback riders make the 216 mile journey from Logansport to Houston visiting towns all along the trail.
The ride began on Saturday morning, Feb. 16 as the riders made their way across the Logansport Bridge. The OSTR has been a tradition since 1956 when the event was started by sixteen men and women.
Morris W. Brown, of Joaquin, is the Trail Boss and he has been riding with the OSTR for 40 years. His father Hugh Brown was one of the founders of the OSTR in 1956.

Emergency personnel from the Timpson Police Department, Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, and the Tenaha Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to a two-vehicle wreck which blocked a single lane of traffic early in the morning on Tuesday, Feb. 12.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) State Trooper Jimmy Faulkner, a 2007 Toyota Camry driven by Ajayi Kolawole, 35, of Houston was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 59 North through the Bobo Community during rainy conditions when the vehicle began to hydroplane.

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons and the Tenaha Lady Tigers went head-to-head at Joaquin High School Friday night as the Lady Tigers pulled out the 41-34 win to earn second place in the district going into the playoffs.

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) maintenance crews throughout the Lufkin District’s nine-county area are beginning to install new 75 mph speed limit signs on roadways throughout the district.
Motorists are advised to be alert for changes in posted speed limits as the signs are put in place.
In September 2011 House Bill 1353 was enacted allowing TxDOT to create a 75 mph speed limit on any state highway found to be “reasonable and safe” through a speed study.

The Tenaha High School girls soccer program is in its fifth year of existence and Laurie Sisk, who is in her third year as head coach, is doing things differently than she did in her first two years as she’s going back to the drawing board, if not even further back.

The young inexperienced Tenaha Tigers football team overcame injuries and a tough pre-district schedule to return to the State Championship Game and they dominated in the District 11-A Football All District Team selections.

The Tenaha City Council recently approved the date election for city council members of May 11 with those positions up for election currently being held by Durand Steadman, Claudine Howard and Larry Terry.
Terry Allen of the Shelby County Groundwater District spoke with the council about the groundwater committee’s report and the council decided for voters to consider it on the next ballot.
