The Community Calendar is a brief, free listing of programs and meetings that are nonprofit or community service events. Events should be open to the public and free to attend. For maximum exposure, information should be submitted two weeks prior to the event. Email the who, what, when and where, including a street address and a contact for more information. Calendar items are not taken on the phone. Email to news@lightandchampion. com. Calendar information runs in date order as space is available.

UPCOMING EVENTS APRIL 27 Saturday

• VFW Fish Fry Shelby County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 invites all local veterans and first responders to a fish fry at noon. The event will take place at the VFW Post Home located at 617 Highway 96 North in Center.

• Need a Car Wash?

Joe’s Car Spa in Center will sonate $5 per car to Shelbyville High School Project Graduation for every car that goes through their automatic car wash Saturday, April 27. Students, parents, teachers, grandparents, friends … get your car washed at Joe’s Saturday!

APRIL 28 Sunday

• Clever Creek meeting Clever Creek Baptist Church on FM 417 West will host Evangelist Jim Moss April 28 – May 1 for “Stepping With Jesus.” Sunday School at 10 a.m. and preaching at 10:55 a.m. Supper at 6 p.m. and the preaching service at 7 p.m. Bro. Barney Bryant of Parkway Baptist Church in Carthage will lead the music Sunday night through Wednesday night. Sheran Bryant will accompany the music on the piano each night. All are welcome to share in the supper and in worship.

APRIL 30 Tuesday

• Library ribbon cutting, book sale Fannie Brown Booth Memorial Library Redditt Room renovation celebrated with Rotary Club at noon. Plus, the library’s four-day book sale begins the same day and runs through Saturday, May 4. Hours Tuesday - Thursday - 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., -Saturday, - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The library is located at 619 Tenaha Street, Center, Texas.

MAY 4 Saturday

• Sardis Cemetery Homecoming Homecoming and fish fry beginning at 11:00 a.m. Catfish plates $12 each with fish, fries, beans, and dessert with tea or water. Donations are always welcome for the cemetery upkeep. Mail donations to 6034 FM 414, Center, TX 75935. Cookbooks will be available for $15 each. MAY 5 Sunday

• Old Sardis Homecoming Old Sardis Cemetery of San Augustine County homecoming with dinner on the grounds and business meeting. Bring a covered dish and join us. Donations are appreciated for the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery.

Directions from Aiken, Hwy. 7, take CR 1210 south for 4.5 miles to intersection of Rocky Mountain Road and Spring Ridge Road (CR 245N). Straight on Spring Ridge Road for .4 miles, cemetery on the left.

MAY 18 Saturday

• Fish fry fundraiser Center Police Department Ladies Auxiliary Fish Fry Fundraiser for Officer Luis Acuna who had emergency surgery and facing follow up. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until soldout at the Center Police Department at 1020 Shelbyville Street. Drive-thru pick up will be available. Plates $10 with fish, fries, hushpuppies, and a drink. Pre-sale tickets are available at the Center Police Department, or by contacting a CPD Ladies Auxiliary member. Also, CPD Ladies Auxiliary raffles for three drawings to win great prizes. Tickets are $5 each, drawing May 4.

Weekly - Tuesdays

• DivorceCare, a weekly divorce recovery and support group, meets Tuesdays 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at New Life Church located at 822 Hurst St. in Center. Find help, discover hope, and experience healing. For more info call 210-2152602.

Weekly - Wednesdays

• Shelby County Commissioners Court meets Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. at the Shelby County Courthouse.

• NA/AA - We can help. Meetings Fridays and Saturdays 6:30 to7:30 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Highway 96 South across from High Rollers in Center.

• Youth Wednesday night services at Mount Calvary Full Gospel Church located at 5527 FM 417 East, Shelbyville at 6:30. Fun inside and outside games, and Bible study.

Monthly – First Saturday

• Scrap Happy Quilters at 9 a.m. at the James Community House at 348 FM 2608, about 1/4 mile on right. Bring sewing machine, supplies, and $2 donation to help James Community House with expenses.

Monthly – First Monday

• Sabine County Beekeepers meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Sabine County Chamber of Commerce on the square, downtown Hemphill. Call James at 409-625-4787 for information.

Monthly - Third Monday

• Shelby County Veterans of Foreign War Post 8904 meets at the Post Home 617 Highway 96 North at 6:30 p.m. Prospective members welcome to sit in on the meeting. For more info call 936-332-0349.

• Christian Motorcyclists Association meets at T&R Steaks and More restaurant at 6:00 p.m. for greet, meet and eat. Business meeting from 7:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.
