The Community Calendar is a brief, free listing of programs and meetings that are nonprofit or community service events. Events should be open to the public and free to attend. For maximum exposure, information should be submitted two weeks prior to the event. Email the who, what, when and where, including a street address and a contact for more information. Calendar items are not taken on the phone. Email to news@lightandchampion. com. Calendar information runs in date order as space is available.

UPCOMING EVENTS MAY 4 Saturday

• Sardis Cemetery Homecoming Homecoming and fish fry beginning at 11:00 a.m. Catfish plates $12 each with fish, fries, beans, and dessert with tea or water. Donations are always welcome for the cemetery upkeep. Mail donations to 6034 FM 414, Center, TX 75935. Cookbooks will be available for $15 each. • Scrap Happy Quilters Meet at 9:00 a.m. at the James-Antioch Community House. Feel free to bring to bring a project you are working on at home. Bring your sewing machine and supplies like any other class you would take and join the fun. New members welcome.

Members are providing these quilts at their own expense. If you wish to make a monetary donation, or have fabric to donate, please contact Margaret Smith at smithm926@aol.com and type in Quilts of Valor in subject line.

MAY 4 Saturday

• Kutter Milford benefit On the Timpson Square. Kutter Milford was severely injured in a car accident April 29, suffering severe head trauma leading to a coma.

The Timpson Masonic Lodge #437 will sell pulled pork sandwiches, chips, and a drink for $20 with proceeds going toward medical expenses. Direct donations to the Masonic Lodge account at Austin Bank in Timpson on May 1. Please stop by the Timpson square on Saturday, and show your support for the Milford family.

MAY 5 Sunday

• Old Sardis Homecoming Old Sardis Cemetery of San Augustine County homecoming with dinner on the grounds and business meeting. Bring a covered dish and join us. Donations are appreciated for the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery.

Directions from Aiken, Hwy. 7, take CR 1210 south for 4.5 miles to intersection of Rocky Mountain Road and Spring Ridge Road (CR 245N). Straight on Spring Ridge Road for .4 miles, cemetery on the left. MAY 8 Wednesday

• Teacher Appreciation reception The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Teacher Appreciation reception Wednesday, May 8 at the Windham Civic Center in Center at 4:30 p.m. Held annually to salute and recognize the dedicated administrations and teaching staff of all the Shelby County school districts. Each campus Teacher of the Year will be recognized by his or her principal and receive a Certificate of Recognition. MAY 9 Thursday

• SCSO employees luncheon The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will honor employees with a luncheon Thursday, May 9 at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office located at 100 Hurst Street in Center. Donations from individual, business or organizations desiring to contribute through food, desserts, drinks, gifts, donations, etc. will be greatly appreciated. MAY 18 Saturday

• Fish fry fundraiser Center Police Department Ladies Auxiliary Fish Fry Fundraiser for Officer Luis Acuna who had emergency surgery and facing follow up. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until sold-out at the Center Police Department at 1020 Shelbyville Street. Drive-thru pick up will be available. Plates $10 with fish, fries, hushpuppies, and a drink. Pre-sale tickets are available at the Center Police Department, or by contacting a CPD Ladies Auxiliary member. Also, CPD Ladies Auxiliary raffles for three drawings to win great prizes. Tickets are $5 each, drawing May 4.

May 18 Saturday

• Jackson Cemetery homecoming The Jackson Cemetery annual homecoming at 10:30 am. including a congregational song service with special song selections. Bro. Larry Andrews will bring a message followed by brief business meeting and a potluck meal in the fellowship hall. Bring tables and chairs if easting outside. Tables and chairs will be available in the fellowship hall for those eating there. • Shelby County Commissioners Court meets Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. at the Shelby County Courthouse.

• NA/AA - We can help. Meetings Fridays and Saturdays 6:30 to7:30 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Highway 96 South across from High Rollers in Center.

• Youth Wednesday night services at Mount Calvary Full Gospel Church located at 5527 FM 417 East, Shelbyville at 6:30. Fun inside and outside games, and Bible study.

Monthly – First Saturday
